“Saint Anne Parish School 8th grader, Finn Karam is one of hundreds of young Barrington volunteers who have joined Hope’s In’s summer service trips to build homes for families living in poverty surrounding Guatemala City’s garbage dump. Founded by twin sisters and Barrington High School alums, Courtney McGovern and Ashley Quigley, Hope’s In’s 9th annual Hope’s in Style fashion show fundraiser is coming up this Sunday. The first Hope’s In Style fashion show took place in February of 2013. The goal was to raise enough money to build a single cinderblock house for one girl’s family living in a shack surrounded by garbage. Now in its 9th year, the Hope’s In Style fashion […]

Students for Playgrounds The mission of Students for Playgrounds is to fundraise $13,000 to build an accessible playground at Centro de Educación Especial Alida España de Arana in Guatemala City.  Alida España de Arana is the only government run, special education school for children and teens with disabilities in all of Guatemala City. Alida España de Arana’s play areas are lacking and unable to accommodate their students. Also, many of the children who attend Alida España de Arana come from the surrounding garbage dump communities and do not have routine access to safe, clean, or accessible play areas.  Our program seeks to involve people, especially students, of all backgrounds and […]

“Just a week after their 8th annual fashion show fundraiser, Hope’s in Style, and days before a team was scheduled to build a home in Guatemala City, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The events following would completely change how Spring and Summer would look at HOPE’S IN, a local nonprofit whose mission is to empower families living in Guatemala City and help develop the next generation of humanitarian leaders. Canceled events and in-person meetings with students, not bringing their usual seventy-five person team to Guatemala for the first summer in seven years, and the knowledge of how the pandemic could devastate the communities they work alongside in Guatemala City quickly beckoned […]

Dear HOPE’S IN Community, First and foremost, thank you for sharing our passion and desire to empower families in Guatemala City. If you are reading this and have been part of our impact, thank you! Our original plan was to communicate any changes for the Service Learning Exchange summer trip to Guatemala at the end of this month. However, after several in-depth conversations with our partners in Guatemala and as a Hope’s In board, we have made a decision. Our summer trip is canceled. Personally, the thought of not going to Guatemala for the first summer in 10 years breaks my heart. The hugs, the tears on dedication day, the […]

“Shelter and access to medical care are basic necessities that are often in short supply in Guatemala. When Pediatric Hospitalist Lavanya Shankar, MD, learned of an opportunity to volunteer at medical clinic and build houses around Guatemala City with her teenage daughter, Sanjana, she jumped at the chance.   “I’ve always wanted to get involved in global health to help others in need,” says Dr. Shankar. “I’m getting a graduate degree in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety, and it goes hand-in-hand with this effort.” I also want to teach the next generation what the world is about and to help them recognize they have so much to offer.”   Last August, Dr. Shankar, […]
