For years I have been wanting to go on a mission trip with the Quigley family after hearing the amazing stories. This year was finally the year. The different things I experienced changed my view on the world and touched my heart with happiness and bliss. Seeing the joy on not only the treasures faces but the parents made me realize that happiness should not depend on the possession of objects, but the importance of family and the love that God provides. Every person that the group passed in the community waved and said hello with a smile that was unforgettable. With the sight of one sticker, a treasure’s eyes […]

This is my second trip to Guatemala to build cinder block homes for families who live in the garbage dump through an amazing organization called Potter’s House. Last year, I went with my daughter Melissa and youngest son Mitch. This year, I was blessed to attend with my entire family including my husband Mike and oldest son Michael. Doing this experience as a family means so much more to me than words can describe. We all participated in scraping, spackling, mixing/hauling cement and painting along side with the new homeowners. As we worked we got to know this precious family and formed a special bond. Even though we speak different […]

And so, after years of sending our boys (now men) on mission trips each summer, I am now on my first mission trip—miles from Bartlett in Guatemala City at Potter’s House Association serving “the treasures” in the Potter’s House community. Forty-one Chicago suburbanites building three cinder block houses, hosting a medical clinic staffed by three physicians, painting at the community center, doing prayer walks, and the list goes on and on. I was told “I would come back a different person”. I thought to myself I am pretty kind, compassionate and generous now. How wrong I was, oh, how wrong I was! I have learned more this week about serving […]

Fashion and compassion will work hand-in-hand on February 24, 1- 4 p.m., when Barrington High School students present a charity fashion show called “Hope’s In Style” at the Garlands Center for The Performing Arts, 1000 Garlands Lane, Barrington, Ill. All proceeds from the event will go to Potter’s House Association to build a house for 8-year-old Monica Morales and her seven family members who are currently living in squalor conditions at the Guatemala City garbage dump in Guatemala. Hope’s in Style, the local organization that supports the Potter’s House effort in Guatemala, hosted an event last Sunday at the Garland’s. Potter’s House co-founder Gladys Guitz and President Edgar Guitz were there to present the organization to those who are unaware of what they do and whom they serve. They also took part in thanking the local efforts of volunteers from this area. For information regarding Potter’s House go to Pottershouse.org. Teens that were on the trip last summer were part of a panel discussing their experiences and how the trip changed the way they look at themselves and life. Over 100 people attended the reception and presentation. New […]
