“Just a week after their 8th annual fashion show fundraiser, Hope’s in Style, and days before a team was scheduled to build a home in Guatemala City, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. The events following would completely change how Spring and Summer would look at HOPE’S IN, a local nonprofit whose mission is to empower families living in Guatemala City and help develop the next generation of humanitarian leaders. Canceled events and in-person meetings with students, not bringing their usual seventy-five person team to Guatemala for the first summer in seven years, and the knowledge of how the pandemic could devastate the communities they work alongside in Guatemala City quickly beckoned […]

Dear HOPE’S IN Community, First and foremost, thank you for sharing our passion and desire to empower families in Guatemala City. If you are reading this and have been part of our impact, thank you! Our original plan was to communicate any changes for the Service Learning Exchange summer trip to Guatemala at the end of this month. However, after several in-depth conversations with our partners in Guatemala and as a Hope’s In board, we have made a decision. Our summer trip is canceled. Personally, the thought of not going to Guatemala for the first summer in 10 years breaks my heart. The hugs, the tears on dedication day, the […]

“Shelter and access to medical care are basic necessities that are often in short supply in Guatemala. When Pediatric Hospitalist Lavanya Shankar, MD, learned of an opportunity to volunteer at medical clinic and build houses around Guatemala City with her teenage daughter, Sanjana, she jumped at the chance.   “I’ve always wanted to get involved in global health to help others in need,” says Dr. Shankar. “I’m getting a graduate degree in Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety, and it goes hand-in-hand with this effort.” I also want to teach the next generation what the world is about and to help them recognize they have so much to offer.”   Last August, Dr. Shankar, […]

This year, HOPE’S IN is so excited for our teams to go to Guatemala! Our summer Service Learning Exchange will host 77 volunteers who will work with seven families to build their new home together, host two weeks of medical clinics alongside local doctors, and strengthen relationships with two children’s homes that have recieved medical grants from us this year. Also, some of our volunteers will get to spend time with our community group for teen mothers and at-risk girls. It will be two very full weeks! As we get ready for our first team to arrive, we asked Dr. Tricia, a volunteer going for the first time, to share […]

This is my first trip to Guatemala with Hope’s In and I’m really looking forward to going. I heard about Hope’s In though several friends a few years ago and have attended a couple Hope’s In Style events since then.  I have been wanting to go on the trip for a while so am very excited that its just a few weeks away. I’m most looking forward to meeting the families there, working with the kids, and helping in the community. I know this is going to be a great experience and I can’t wait to go! -Sarika, Barrington High School

“I feel excited as I prepare to go on the week two trip to Guatemala, since this will be my first mission trip. I can’t wait to serve the people of Guatemala by building houses, working in medical clinics, and helping in other ways. I heard about the trip through Interact’s sponsor, Mr. Quigley, and a few of the student members that had previously participated in the trip. I decided to go on the trip for several reasons. First, I have always been interested in mission trips and going abroad to provide a helping hand for those less privileged. I have a passion for serving others as I feel it […]

“This is my fourth year going to Guatemala and seeing the treasures and I am more excited than ever. Each year brings new emotions, memories, and amazing experiences. I’m most looking forward to seeing old friends that I have made and impacting the lives of new treasures. The character and love from the people in the garbage dump community is probably the takeaway first timers are most touched by. It really makes the trip infinitely times better. I cannot wait to be there!” -Mitch, Freshman at University of Michigan  Hello HOPE’S IN community! As we gear up for this summer’s trips with Potters House Association, we want to share with you […]

Dear Hope’s In community, It was difficult to say goodbye to those that we love in Guatemala but we returned with a renewed passion to continue to serve and love not only the Treasures but those around us too! So let me say it now, we love this community! Thank you for pouring out your support over the past few weeks. This new season of service is going to be filled with exciting new steps, initiatives and leadership development. Please see this note as not a “see you next year” but as an invitation to continue or start getting involved with Hope’s In! The trips next year will to take […]

Dear Hope’s In community, Last year one of our volunteers Matt Coy was moved when he noticed so many small children running around the communities with no shoes. Community streets are often lined with scraps of metal, broken glass, dirt and dog waste so shoes are necessary for good health and sanitation. Feeling convicted, Matt started an initiative called Hope’s In Stride where he collected over 500 pounds of shoes to give to the Treasures. Yesterday over 40 children left soccer camp with a new soccer jersey donated by BASA, a pair of shoes collected by Matt, and a soccer ball (soccer balls and jerseys were collected by our volunteer […]

Dear Hope’s In community, Concrete day was a success! All six houses have a solid concrete floor that will protect from bacteria build up, prevent the Treasures from breathing in harmful methane gasses that come off the ground, and provide a much cleaner environment. In the afternoon we did the Prayer Walk project. All our volunteers entered into different families homes to hear their stories, listen to their challenges and dreams. We also prayed for the families and were eager to encourage everyone we met. One volunteer said started her prayer so beautifully: “Dear God, thank you for bringing us to this woman’s door.” Amongst these exciting projects we have […]
