“CHICAGO (WLS) — A high school trip has now inspired a years-long passion for two women from Barrington. “I actually got an internship when I was 16 years old and I was in Guatemala City,” said Courtney McGovern. “Just being there taught me such a huge lesson about how dignified housing is a human right.” That trip inspired Courtney and her twin sister Ashley to do something. They formed a fundraiser called “Hope’s In Style,” a fashion show. “I knew after Courtney came back we had to do something,” said Ashley Quigley.” Watch the Full LIVE TV Interview Here.

Update written by Katie Rosales, Fortaleza Program Director Last month, we finally found the perfect rental space for Fortaleza’s headquarters in Guatemala City. It’s a big step for our work with Fortaleza women and children. This space will be used for one-on-one psychological therapy, intentional counseling, mentorship, tutoring, and an office space for our two staff members, Katie and Luisa. The space is located just a few blocks away from where most of the girls live. We are looking forward to transforming the place into a refreshing and welcoming refuge for the women we serve. Opening our own space in the community means deeper connections with the women, walking closer […]

“This past year has been an interesting one. With all the ups and downs of COVID, and the ups and downs of Junior year, I wanted this summer to be one that offered me an opportunity to focus on something that is both really important to me and would give me the chance to gain a bit of perspective on the issues facing our world. During the pandemic, it became so easy to simply focus on all the negative things being thrown our way. As a result, I frequently found myself feeling upset and angry with all the difficult things I had to deal with as a consequence of COVID. […]

Students for Playgrounds The mission of Students for Playgrounds is to fundraise $13,000 to build an accessible playground at Centro de Educación Especial Alida España de Arana in Guatemala City.  Alida España de Arana is the only government run, special education school for children and teens with disabilities in all of Guatemala City. Alida España de Arana’s play areas are lacking and unable to accommodate their students. Also, many of the children who attend Alida España de Arana come from the surrounding garbage dump communities and do not have routine access to safe, clean, or accessible play areas.  Our program seeks to involve people, especially students, of all backgrounds and […]

Dear HOPE’S IN Community, First and foremost, thank you for sharing our passion and desire to empower families in Guatemala City. If you are reading this and have been part of our impact, thank you! Our original plan was to communicate any changes for the Service Learning Exchange summer trip to Guatemala at the end of this month. However, after several in-depth conversations with our partners in Guatemala and as a Hope’s In board, we have made a decision. Our summer trip is canceled. Personally, the thought of not going to Guatemala for the first summer in 10 years breaks my heart. The hugs, the tears on dedication day, the […]
