“Hope’s In is a locally founded charitable organization that partners with Potter’s House to raise money in order to build houses and provide help for families in the Garbage Dump Communities of Guatemala City. Mandy and Laura, Potter’s House representatives from Guatemala, were visiting Barrington a few weeks ago. Having traveled to Guatemala with Hope’s In last summer, I was excited to interview them about the work they do in the communities surrounding the Garbage Dump and the impact locally founded Hope’s In has had on their work. Sarika Bhuva: What is Potter’s House role in the Garbage Dump Communities? “Our role is to provide development opportunities for the […]

Sweat dripped down my brow and snaked down my back as I scampered down the alleyway, careful not to trip on an upturned rock. The sun scorched the top of my head but I paid no mind to it as I focused on the task at hand, beating these kids at soccer. I flashed a hard earned smile towards my brother before quickly kicking the ball his way. Rejected! Axel, one of the older boys, intercepted my pass and swiftly dribbled the ball away from us. He shot it past two trashcans and the ball slammed into the wall of a house shaking its tin core. I grimaced and hoped […]

This is my first trip to Guatemala with Hope’s In and I’m really looking forward to going. I heard about Hope’s In though several friends a few years ago and have attended a couple Hope’s In Style events since then.  I have been wanting to go on the trip for a while so am very excited that its just a few weeks away. I’m most looking forward to meeting the families there, working with the kids, and helping in the community. I know this is going to be a great experience and I can’t wait to go! -Sarika, Barrington High School

“I feel excited as I prepare to go on the week two trip to Guatemala, since this will be my first mission trip. I can’t wait to serve the people of Guatemala by building houses, working in medical clinics, and helping in other ways. I heard about the trip through Interact’s sponsor, Mr. Quigley, and a few of the student members that had previously participated in the trip. I decided to go on the trip for several reasons. First, I have always been interested in mission trips and going abroad to provide a helping hand for those less privileged. I have a passion for serving others as I feel it […]

“This is my fourth year going to Guatemala and seeing the treasures and I am more excited than ever. Each year brings new emotions, memories, and amazing experiences. I’m most looking forward to seeing old friends that I have made and impacting the lives of new treasures. The character and love from the people in the garbage dump community is probably the takeaway first timers are most touched by. It really makes the trip infinitely times better. I cannot wait to be there!” -Mitch, Freshman at University of Michigan  Hello HOPE’S IN community! As we gear up for this summer’s trips with Potters House Association, we want to share with you […]

“We are about two weeks away from the two weeks that we will serve within the Guatemala City Garbage Dump communities! The Hope’s In family is excited about moving forward with the preparation and packing that is to come during this short time frame. With a total of four different doctors, the medical team will serve to provide care and medicine to the communities closest to the dump. Joining the medical team in their efforts to create a healthier community, Hope’s In is partnering with VOSH who is bringing a team of eye doctors. VOSH will provide eye exams for members of the community and bring down eyewear and other supplies. With the expertise of both […]

“Hope’s In is a non-profit organization that raises money to build safe shelters for families in desperate need of a stable home. One house costs between $5,500-$7,500 to construct. Gianna’s birthday goal was to raise $500 for material costs for one house, which friends and family have generously helped her surpass. Gianna’s mom, Courtney Keuer, said that Gianna has done this before after the devastating earthquake hit Haiti in 2010. “Gianna felt sad that all these kids’ toys and books were destroyed and she wanted to send them her toys. We decided that instead of getting new toys for her 4th birthday, we would raise money for the kids in […]

“Barrington High School Alumni might recognize Alexandra or remember her sister Natalie from the Class of 2004, or brother Paul from the Class of 2010. Growing up in the Fox Point neighborhood, Alexandra was recognized by old neighbors as we sat enjoying our coffee. Dr. Alexandra Troy’s youthful appearance is deceiving. She is an accomplished medical professional ready to start sharing her talent with individuals who lack basic medical care in the Guatemala City garbage dump community through Hope’s In…” Photo courtesy of Living60010. “A HOPE’S IN volunteer once said: “What happens in Guatemala certainly does not stay in Guatemala.” He was referring to the sense of empowerment and compassion that had penetrated his heart and led him to believe that he is capable of making an impact. That’s the effect serving others has on people, that’s the effect HOPE’S IN believes will shape the next generation of humanitarian leaders. It is because of this belief that HOPE’S IN has now created a new set of programs to empower every person to attend their summer trips! The HOPE’S IN Scholarship program launched this week, along with the new Hope Works program. Both of which are supplements to their […]
